Editorial Review

These powerful 8-inch kitchen shears cut food, flowers, paper, cardboard, even carpet. They're balanced in the hand and work equally well for right-handers and left-handers. Blades formed from high-carbon stainless steel curve inward so they meet in only one place at any given position and cutting action is smooth and exact. One blade's serrations prevent slippage. A plastic cap on the screw securing the blades can be lifted so the shears can be taken apart for resharpening. Steel-tooth insets in the rugged synthetic handles twist open bottle and jar caps. The shears are dishwasher-safe, but hand washing better protects the blade edges. --Fred Brack

I haven't actually used this product yet since it it a Christmas present, but I did examine it. It looks like a winner. It was shipped amazingly fast, especially considering the time of year.

- After 6 months of daily use, the shears are still sharp with no signs of rust or wear at the joint.
- The textured handles provide a steady grip on messy items like raw poultry.
- Clean up well in the sink or dishwasher; there are no creases or gaps for food to get trapped in.
- Easy to assemble and break down.

Wusthof's Pull Apart Shears would be my one "desert island" necessity: I use them for snipping fresh herbs such as mint, basil and rosemary, snipping macerated fruit into smaller pieces, cutting parchment paper to fit pans, making quick work of coarsely chopping pecans and walnuts, and chopping vegetables such as asparagus into uniform lengths. They slide apart for easy washing in the dishwasher, and mine have stayed super-sharp for over two years despite daily abuse. Made in Germany, these should last you for many years of kitchen prep.

I almost didn't order these when one review pointed out that they were made in China, but I'm glad I did because all the reviews gave them good marks on performance. When they arrived, I looked all over the box and the shears and was unable to find ANY country of origin; only long-term use will demonstrate their quality.
