Editorial Review

Compact and dexterous, Komachi’s 4-1/2-inch fish knife features a wide, flat surface ideal for transporting filleted salmon or sole. The blade’s cutting edge offers a curved shape while its top edge carries a row of grooves designed to easily remove fish scales. The knife hides a whimsical, fish-shaped cutout beneath its handle.

This unique collection--by renowned blade manufacturer KAI in Seki City, Japan--offers practical kitchen cutlery in cheerful colors. Durable, high-carbon, stainless-steel blades featuring a fluorinated-resin coating offer hygienic food handling. The lightweight knife does not have a bolster but feels balanced thanks to the full tang. Clear, Ionomer-resin handles in coordinating hues are ergonomically designed and fit comfortably in hand. Made in Japan and measuring 9-1/4 by 2 by 3/4 inches overall, this fish blade is dishwasher-safe, but hand washing is recommended. -- Amy Arnold

Summary:Great knife for cutting vegetables

I am a big fan of the Komachi knives. Their blades are much thinner than your typical chef's knife and they are incredibly sharp. They also have a nice feel. My only reservation is that although they can be sharpened, I can never get them as sharp as when they were new. Nevertheless, it makes a great everyday knife.

Kai will claim this is a fish knife. They lie. I've used this on fish, on meat, vegetables, chocolate ... I can't for the life of me figure out what this knife wouldn't be good on. It's not a fish knife. It's a "first knife I reach for" knife.

While I'm legally required to note that the thing I'm most happy to have gotten by getting married is my wife, the knives we received are a close second (but definitely second place, honey!). We got two Shun knives because they were on the registry, and they're awefully pretty and prestigious. They also cut very very well. But my wife got this knife at her bridal shower from a friend of her mother's, and it's been an absolute delight to use.

It is, of course, very sharp. The color is pretty. But the thing that swayed me was that the first time I picked it up to cut something with it (I think the main Shun I was using was dirty), it just fit in my hand so comfortably. And then when I started cutting up the huge English cucumber I was working on, I found that the smaller size, the handle, and the overall construction of the knife made it feel like an extension of my hand, rather than like a tool I was holding. It's just a joy.

I highly recommend this knife. For everything in the kitchen that requires a knife, and doesn't require a long one.

This knife is insanely sharp!!! I love it!! I have a much more expensive chef's knife (cant remember the name but it cost 60 dollars) and this knife is just as sharp if not sharper!!! cuts like butter though anything! I dont use it for fish only, it is a good small knife for cutting all kinds of things, when you dont need a big long chef knife. If you get this you will not be disappointed at all.

These knives rock. I almost have every knife they make and I love them all. Especially the bread knife! The blue fish knife (how brilliant is that to color code knives?) is terrific and showed up just in time for making gravlox this weekend!

Oh SO worth the money!
