I have owned professional knives costing $80+ and this knife far exceeded my expectations for the price. The first night I used it the knife cut through my raw meat like butter. I was stunned as I had not owned a knife like this in about 4 years. The next day for kicks I took it out to the garden and trimmed down some 2" width stalks on my Hawaiian lei plant (plumeria) to encourage new spring growth. The tops came off effortlessly. Next I tried it out on some oranges and it sliced right through clean as if the orange was invisible. Finally, I carved up a ham and had thin beautiful slices just like at the deli. Like the other reviewers, I have always been pleased with Anolon products, and this is no exception. They have tight quality controls and consistently put out great products. I highly recommend this knife to anyone looking for a good carving knife, or for that matter, a good all around knife. The only complaint I have is that I would have liked to have also received a full length sheath with the knife for easy storage.

This carving set really is beautiful and well made. The specifications Amazon put in the description are contained in the packaging, which does not include a case, just a cardboard box. Amazon ran this set for $9.99 about three weeks ago, and this price was truly a screaming deal. I already have an Anolon paring knife that I paid $20 for, and that convinced me beforehand that the carving set would be well worth purchasing. Now I cannot decide whether to keep this for myself or give it to my brother for his birthday.

I was very happy with the quality & looks. The only negative, if you want to call it a negative, is that it is made in China. I would still recommend this set to anyone who wants a very nice carving set.

As the other reviewers noted this IS a beautiful knife set. I liked it so much that I came back and bought a few more sets before they sold out since the set is cheaper than one individual piece!! I also ordered the bread knife for myself and once it arrives, I likely will order more to make gift sets. The set is a little on the heavy side for those who prefer lighter weight knives. I will hand wash them to preserve the wood and knife blade. I also own Anolon cookware, bakeware, and utensils which I absolutely love and NEVER have been disappointed in the quality of their products, even the ones made in China.

Summary:Great knife, great deal!

I was looking online for some decent knives the other day, since I was revamping some of my kitchen equipment, and, as a single, 25-year old male, all I had were some cheap old hand-me-down knives. After researching and checking out set after set, and passing on those cheap full sets of knives, I saw this carving set. I have to admit, the first thing that caught my eye was the $19.99 price. But after looking at the description and seeing all of the good quality "buzzwords": full tang, German steel, forged, etc, I thought that this looked like quite the steal, especially since, even on Amazon, the price of the two pieces if purchased separately would be be $65-$75. So I ordered this set and the 9" bread knife, since it also was inexpensive, and I make quite a bit of homemade bread.
Before the set could even get to my house, I saw it again on Amazon's wonderful Friday Sale for $9.99, and decided that, even if they were only mediocre, they would still make good, cheap wedding gifts. I'm at the age where I go to a lot of friends' weddings, so I bought 3 more sets to give as gifts, because who could pass up such a great deal?
I finally received the knives today (ironically everything came on the same day) and had to check them out. I was amazed with how HEAVY they were, compared to my thin bladed, plastic handled cheap knives. They feel very solid in the hand, and the wood handles make them stunningly good looking pieces. I have to admit, I didn't get a chance to use the carving set yet, but it made me want to go out and buy a roast, just so I'd have something to carve! The bread knife worked incredibly well, sliced cleanly through my crumbly homemade bread, so I can only imagine that the slicer does just as wonderfully.
The only downsides are that, while the steel IS German, the cutlery as a whole is made in China, along with everything else it seems like, and I wish they would have came with a top to the display box they are in. It has a little plastic tray set into a cardboard box, but once you take it out of the plastic container, there is no top to the box. Other than that, my only complaint is that now I want to buy MORE of these great knives!
